Did you know that since February 2020, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) has increased? COVID-19 has also been linked with heart disease. Having an AED onsite at your workplace has always been very important since AED drastically increase the chances of survival of a SCA victim, but now, having an AED readily available is even more important. Here are 5 reasons why you need an AED:
There is an increase in OHCA events.
There was a 52% increase from 321 OHCA events in 2019 to 490 OHCA events in 2022.
Deaths from OHCA events has increased.
- Survival rates decreased from 14.9% to 7.9%.
- Bystander response decreased from 61% to 51%.
- EMT response time increased from 6.6 minutes to 7.6 minutes.
Cardiac damage is linked to COVID-19.
Out of 100 patients with mild illnesses and a media age of 59:
- 60% had myocarditis or inflammation
- 78% showed heart abnormalities
Myocarditis is a risk factor for SCA in young athletes.
- Found at least five Big Ten Conference athletes.
- Causes about 75 deaths per year in athletes ages 13-25.
One in three people with COVID-19 in the U.S. has heart disease.
